MORE THAN 1.6 BILLION PEOPLE DEPEND ON FORESTS FOR FOOD, MEDICINE, SHELTER AND ENERGY.
FOREST-FRIENDLY PRACTICES EXIST!
AND WE NEED TO PUSH LOGGING COMPANIES TO ADOPT THEM.
More than 130 000 square km of forest, an area roughly the equivalent to Greece, is cut each year mainly for wood and to make place for agriculture (1).
Every TWO SECONDS, an area of forest the size of a football field is clear-cut by illegal loggers (2).
In Canada, 93% of logging is done by clear-cutting and this harvest occurs mainly in primary forests (3).
We need to send a clear message to logging companies practicing clear-cutting that we do not agree with this activity. Let's not buy or use lumber and paper that does not originate from legally and sustainably harvested forests. By doing this, logging companies will have to turn to sound forest management, through certification such as FSC, PEFC and SFI.
To be successful, a ban needs to be broadcasted far and wide.
